How to Dispose of Dark Magick Spell Remains and Negative Energy

As a witch, I don’t make it a habit to practice dark magick often. This is a personal preference of mine. I dislike negativity of all forms and I avoid it if I can, however, I refuse to be “avoidant” in situations that demand attention. Furthermore, I am a huge believer in balance. In life there must be a healthy balance. If I see the scale is slightly askew, I may leave well enough alone and allow the universe to work things out but if that scale becomes heavily weighted on one side due to injustice, malicious intent or outright evil I feel it is my right and duty to step in. This is when I am compelled to perform dark magick. Some people call this type of magick “black” but I do not prefer to do this because the color black, in my view, gets a really bad wrap. Black can be used to absorb and repel negativity. It can be used for balance, protection and banishing things that mean you harm and to me these things are not bad but necessary.

When you perform a spell that has a lot of negative energy attached to it, even if it is done with good intention, it is not something you want hanging around physically or spiritually. The law of attraction states that like attracts like, so if you do a karma lemon spell, for example, leave it sitting on your work altar and then come home in a bad mood as we all do sometimes, a day or two later, your negative energy is going to combine with the negative energy already lingering with your karma lemon spell remains. This negative energy is going to fester, grow and spread. Pretty soon everyone in your home is going to feel it and this is going to be a very unpleasant, unhappy situation. You have to get rid of the remains of your dark magick and the sooner the better!!!

So, the question remains how to dispose of this material? The only things I save after completing a dark magick spell are crystals and certain magickal tools, for example, my cauldron. Everything else must go. Magickal tools and crystals can easily be cleansed (physically and spiritually) and recharged with positive energy. Be careful in how you charge your crystals. Some crystals can be damaged by water, the sun and or salt. I prefer to charge my crystals with a full or dark moon. Another great way is to bury them in the earth.

The best way to dispose of your spell remains is to put everything into a brown paper bag or thin cardboard box and bury it. When I say everything, I mean everything. The ashes from any and everything you may have burned, the incense ashes, the candle wax, empty tea lights, the herbs, nails, thorns, salt, sand, bones, paper (you get the picture). I use brown paper bags or thin cardboard because it decomposes fast and easily. Do not use plastic. It is not good for the environment. I like to bury my dark magick spell remains because it is very symbolic of laying it to rest. Do not bury the remains where you live! To me this is basically common sense and should go without saying, however, I have literally heard of someone doing this very thing and then wonder in confusion as to why he was having constant bad luck. I love the idea of burying spell remains in a cemetery but often the cemetery rules do not permit this, additionally, the energy of the cemetery itself may not permit this but that is another blog post altogether. Take the remains to a three-way crossroad or out to a secluded woods or field, bury it in a fairly deep hole (at least a foot or two feet deep), cover the hole, walk away and never look back. Don’t forget to take a small garden tool to dig the hole otherwise you're going to be working really hard, getting really dirty digging a hole with your paws like an animal.

I hear people saying they put spell remains in water such as rivers and streams, but I never do this because it just doesn't sit right with me. Firstly, in most every spell, particularly dark magick spells, I use at least one if not several poisonous herbs. There are fish in the water and other things you cannot see. Little microorganisms necessary for the cycle of life and you could poison them with your herbs, oils, wax etc. Think of the animals that drink from that water source. Think of the people that may drink or swim in that water source. It is wrong on so many levels to dispose of any spell remains in this way, dark or positive, it does not matter. Additionally, if you think about it, you are basically throwing your unwanted, negativity ridden garbage into the water and thereby polluting the water and environment. Lastly, you can definitely get fined in some places by doing this.

Some witches like to burn the remains of their dark magick spell remnants, and I think this is a fine method except remember that after you burn something you still have ashes to dispose of which is not that serious in my view because when you burn something you are there by purifying it. But not everything burns easily. For example, you are going to be pretty hard pressed to get an iron nail to burn unless you have a very powerful incinerator of some kind. Then you are still left with the conundrum of what to do with the items that don’t burn easily or at all. I think it is easier and faster to just bury it, however, if you feel within yourself the need to purify it first by burning then always do what feels right to you. Additionally, you can always cleanse, purify and recharge that nail or another item that will not burn. Always keep in mind when burning, that some herbs are toxic and can produce poisonous fumes and smoke as they burn so if you still want to burn the remains, wear a mask and burn in an open, well-ventilated area so that you do not inadvertently poison your pets and family members with noxious smoke. This is another reason I prefer the burial method.

After you physically dispose of the spell remnants you still have to clear the space you were working. Every witch has his or her own method of doing this. First, I physically clean everything with Florida Water that I make myself, but you can find Florida Water very easily at any metaphysical shop or just do a quick search online. It is very inexpensive yet powerful. Then I banish any remaining negativity by smudging the area with cleansing herbs. I love the smell of lavender and rosemary, but this is my preference. Many people use white sage for this purpose, but white sage has been overharvested, and there are many equally potent herbal substitutions such as palo santo, frankincense, or any cleansing incense you may have on hand. As you are smudging, speak words to banish any remaining negativity that may be lingering about. These words can be as simple or complex as you deem necessary. I usually say something very simple and to the effect of: “I banish any and all forms of negativity from my home and from my life. Only peace and happiness will remain.”

Lastly, whatever you do, please do not forget to cleanse yourself. Negative energy can be very sticky and may attach itself to you as well. You can do this very simply and easily by taking a spiritually cleansing shower or bath. This is to be done with purpose and not just as an afterthought to your regular bathing routine. Many people do not prefer to take a bath as they feel they are sitting in what they equate to a tub full of filth and negativity that has been washed off of them. I personally love baths and do not feel this is true for me, however, if this is your mindset there is nothing wrong with that. Just use a spiritually cleansing bath bar with the herbs and oils made right in the bar. All that negativity is washed right down the drain. If, like me, you prefer the bath method, simply add your herbs and oils right to the water. I like to put herbs in a sachet to help myself with the cleanup. You can place a few crystals around your bath or shower. Amethyst is great for healing and spiritual cleansing. Rose quartz restores self-love and clear quartz brings peace and positivity. Black tourmaline or black obsidian is going to absorb and dispose of any residual negativity. However, these are just my suggestions, and you can use any crystals you deem suitable. I also like to burn a nag champa incense stick (because it's my favorite) and light a white and black candle during my bath. The black candle absorbs negativity, and the white candle restores peace. You can even anoint and dress these candles with cleansing oils and herbs, but it is not necessary. If a spiritually cleansing bath does not suit you then you can simply smudge yourself with cleansing herbs or incense. Again, regardless of the method you choose, it is most necessary to speak words of power and purpose: “I wash away (remove)

any and all negativity from myself and my life. Only peace and happiness will remain.”

Ultimately, it is your decision how you deal with the remains of your work, and you should always do what feels right and works best for you. The goal here is to dispose of the negative energy that is attached to your dark magick so that it does not fester, grow and contaminate your life and loved ones with bad luck and all-around negativity. This should be done as promptly as possible. Don’t allow your purpose and good intention to go to waste by filling your own life and the lives of those you love with anything even remotely negative. Banish it. Get rid of it. Lay it to rest. And live your life happy and free of negativity knowing that you have done what is best for you and those you love.
